Sacrifice that Honors God

Psalm 50

23 But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me.
If you keep to my path,
I will reveal to you the salvation of God.”

This Psalm of Asaph concentrates a lot on those who have turned their backs on God and forgotten His mighty power and loving ways, but at the end of the Psalm, Asaph has a reminder about the type of sacrifice that truly honors God: giving thanks. For years, I have told students that in a circle prayer, if they feel uncomfortable praying out loud that they should simply say, “thank You, Jesus” because those three words are a mouthful! Giving thanks to God is the first step on the path to salvation. It is not until we can thank God, that we can accept His free gift of Salvation through Jesus. If we do not continue to thank God throughout our lives, can we really claim to have grasped the meaning of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross? If we can’t thank God for being with us during the rough times in our lives, and thank God for when our lives are going well, then we are guilty of pushing God on the “back burner.” God does not tolerate that kind of attitude, nor does He have to! May my life be filled with thanksgiving to God. He deserves no less from this goober!
