Servant Leader

Mark 10

41 When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. 42 So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. 43 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

James and John have just made their power play. They asked Jesus to seat them at His right and His left when His Kingdom is established. Man, were they ever in for a surprise. First, Jesus talks about a bitter cup from which they will have to drink, then He tells them it is not up to Him who sits on His right and left, then the other disciples find out and are mad. Then, Jesus lays the bomb diggity on them: whoever wants to be a leader must be a servant! Lord, help me to have the proper attitude to be a servant leader for You, and to put aside any foolish pride or ego issues that would hinder me in that regard.
