Who Is Laughing Now?

Mark 5

40a The crowd laughed at him.

Sometimes we who follow Christ in this country get all pity partied up when the culture makes fun of us. We even go so far as to feel “persecuted” when folks make light of our faith in Jesus. In this passage from Mark, Jesus has come into Jairus’ house to raise his daughter from the dead. Jesus has declared that the girl is not dead but asleep. Then comes the laughter. Jesus throws everyone out of the house and brings the girl back to her father full of life. A couple of observations today: 1) Jesus didn’t waste one second worrying about the laughing crowd. He got rid of them. 2) Jesus was not distracted from the task at hand…not by the laughing crowd, not by the seeming ridiculous situation, not by anything nor anyone. No pity party here, only Jesus glorifying God the Father. May I live my life that way, too!
